A Clean Slate Offered To Ex-Cons
New Jersey - Sunni A. Salahuddin, owner of Clear Your Record!, a company devoted to helping African Americans get back on their feet, represents the vanguard of a nationwide movement to contend with a crisis. With unprecedented numbers of African Americans carrying some kind of criminal record, and employers ever more vigilant about checking backgrounds in the post-9/11 era, Black communities are filled with people living in a kind of legal limbo, even after paying their debt to society. Depending on the crime and circumstances, they may be denied jobs, public housing, welfare benefits, student loans, or the right to vote. "Everybody deserves a second chance," Salahuddin said.

Councilwoman Faatz To Convene Task Force To Examine Police Arrest Issues
Denver City Councilwoman Jeanne Faatz today announced that she is convening a fact-finding task force of stakeholders to examine arrest issues in the wake of recent media reports and testimony to City Council indicating a decline in arrest rates and a reduction in traffic tickets issued. Councilwoman Faatz, who chairs the City’s Safety Committee, said she "wants to get a cross-section of the best minds and experts together to brainstorm the reasons for the declines and devise solutions. These recommendations will be forwarded to the City Council Safety Committee for its October meetings."

The group includes Manager of Safety Al LaCabe, Police Chief Gerry Whitman, Cathy Reynolds, former City Council President Earl Peterson, Director of the Civil Service Commission, one representative each from the District Attorney’s Office and the City Attorney’s Office, two representatives of the Police Protective Association--the Police Union--and two additional volunteer police officers who will be chosen at random from those expressing interest in serving.

The task force will meet twice--on Sept. 8 and on Sept. 22, from 1-4:00 pm in the Wellington E. Webb Building Room 4.F.6. The task force will examine data, analyze the problems, and brainstorm solutions, including policy, law, and staffing recommendations. "I’m delighted that stakeholders are willing to problem-solve in a way that doesn’t cost the taxpayers a dime and that has the potential for speedy action," Councilwoman Faatz said.
