GWHS Hosts First High School Ebony Ball
On Sunday, Dec. 11, George Washington High School (GWHS) hosted the first High School Ebony Ball at the Newman Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Denver, developed by GWHS’s African-American Culture Club. The AACC was able raise over $5,000 for the very successful event from 11 colleges and universities, four philanthropic institutions, and two alumni associations including the Colorado Yale Association. In turn, they were able to recognize 40 sophomores and juniors from 17 high schools across Colorado and award those juniors in attendance with a total of $1,800 in savings bonds. The event’s keynote speaker Kevin Patterson, Denver Public Schools Board of Education District 4 Representative and Treasurer, delivered a speech on the importance of higher education.

Museo De Las Américas Announces New Director Of PR/Marketing
The Museo de las Américas announces former gallery director and curator Gilbert I. Barrera as its new Director of Public Relations/Marketing, which will commence this month. Barrera began his career in the arts as an exhibitions prepararer for the Contemporary Arts Museum/Houston in 1987. Since then, he has been involved with the arts in multiple capacities, having collaborated and worked with some of the most prestigious institutions and galleries in Houston, Texas including The Menil Collection, MFA / Houston, Meredith Long and Co., and Robert McClain and Co. As Director of PR/Marketing, Barrera will join the team at the Museo in accomplishing its new vision and constructing a vibrant role that celebrates the cultural achievements of the people of Latin America.

The Museo de las Américas is the Rocky Mountain Region’s foremost museum dedicated to the cultural achievements of the people of the Americas from ancient to contemporary times. The museum is centrally located in the Santa Fe Arts District, one of Denver’s oldest Latino neighborhoods at 861 Santa Fe Drive.

NDHC Receives Two Housing Counseling HUD Grants
On Monday, Dec. 5, the Northeast Denver Housing Center (NDHC) received approximately $60,000 to continue and enrich its Housing Counseling programs. Local and national HUD officials attended the check presentation ceremony that took place at 1735 Gaylord St. in Denver. The two HUD grants were awarded to NDHC's Counseling Department to provide pre-purchase information to ultimately increase home ownership.

NDHC is a 22-year-old not-for-profit company that provides affordable, sustainable residences for the underserved. The Northeast Denver Housing Center was established in 1982 by the current Executive Director, Getabecha Mekonnen, Honorary Board member John A. Stovall, and current Deputy Director Tracy Smith III.

Sosa Joins Denver Foundation
The Denver Foundation announced that Christiano Sosa has recently joined the Foundation as Program Officer for the Community Grants Program. Prior to joining The Denver Foundation, Christiano was the Executive Director of the Northern Colorado AIDS Project in Fort Collins, Co. He also served as Program Officer at the Gill Foundation, Director of Client Services at Project Angel Heart, and trainer and provider of technical assistance at the Rocky Mountain Center for Health Education and Promotion. Christiano is a Colorado Trust Fellow and is currently in the Master’s of Nonprofit Management Program at Regis University.

Established in 1925, The Denver Foundation is a community foundation dedicated to improving life in Metro Denver through philanthropy, leadership, and strengthening the community. In 2004, The Denver Foundation and its donors awarded $22 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, most of which served residents in the seven-county Metro Denver area.
