Denver Celebrates Mexico’s Cry For Independence

"El Grito de la Independencia,” Spanish for the Cry of Independence, is a commemoration of Father Miguel Hidalgo's independence movement in Mexico, which later spread to all parts of Latin America. Sept. 16, 1810, was the day Hidalgo's forces marched toward Mexico City under the banner of the Virgin de Guadalupe, and has become a Mexican Independence Day.

NEWSED Community Development Corporation and Santa Fe Drive Redevelopment Corporation will host the 15th annual “El Grito de la Independencia” Festival on Saturday, Sept. 15 and Sunday, Sept. 16, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., on the 800 to 1000 blocks of Santa Fe Drive in Denver. The event hosts welcome the community to join a celebration of an important historical event, which represents freedom and a positive acceptance of the diversity of the greater Denver community. Over 75,000 attendees celebrated in the streets in previous years.

The goals for the El Grito de la Independencia Fiesta are to share in the beauty and pride of Latino history and culture, to recognize the diversity of the greater Denver community, to showcase the artistic talent in the community, and to raise funds for the continued operation of the two hosting nonprofit organizations.

The day's events will include food and beverage vendors, international gifts and handcrafted items, an Artist's Gallery, and an Aztec Market. Activities will include children's games and rides, and live entertainment throughout the day. For more information, go online to www.newsed.org/elGrito.htm.

Also on Sunday, Sept. 16, the 14th annual El Grito 5K run and walk will begin at 9 a.m. at the Historic Buckhorn Exchange Restaurant at 10th and Osage Light Rail Stop.  The race entry fees will support El Grito Runners, Inc. 501c3 Scholarship Fund, which awards college scholarships to graduating high school seniors who have participated in cross country and track. The official race T-shirts feature a design inspired by the Tarahumara, an indigenous Mexican culture known for its long-distance running. The post-race fiesta includes breakfast burritos and unique tile awards, as well as hot Latin tunes!

Registration is $16 at Runner’s Roost locations on South Colorado Boulevard, Parker Road, Wadsworth & W. Alameda, Road Runner Sports, Boulder Running Company-Littleton, and Running Wild-Highlands Ranch. Registration can also be done online at www.elgrito5k.org or www.active.com. The registration fee increases to $20 on race day.
