Spectrum Wins 4 State Awards


The Colorado Association of Black Journalists (CABJ) awarded the Denver Urban Spectrum in four separate categories at its annual scholarship and media awards banquet at the Denver Marriott City Center on Aug. 3. The Spectrum was competing with 10 nominations against newspaper entries from across Denver in the annual Scribes in Excellence awards, sponsored by the Denver-based state chapter of the 4,000-member National Association of Black Journalists. Other awards were given to professionals in the public relations, television and radio industries. (A complete list of the 2007 winners is below.)

CABJ also awarded scholarships to Justin Adams of the University of Colorado at Boulder, Brittany Taylor of Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama, Bethany Andrews of the University of Colorado at Boulder and Dion Rabouin of Ithaca College in New York.

Denver Post Room Editor Elana Ashanti Jefferson won “Print Journalist of the Year,” Fox 31 News 5 a.m. Anchor Shaul Turner won “Broadcast Journalist of the Year,” and Trade Winds Communications founder and president Tracy Williams won “Public Relations Professional of the Year.”

Veteran communicator Alton Dillard II of the Elections Division of the Denver Clerk and Recorder office won the Kelvin McNeil “Grace Under Fire” award, and Nightside Assignment Editor for 9News Nadia Gedeon took home the “CABJ President’s Cup” for broadcasting excellence. Adam Dempsey won the Kaiser Permanente “Thrive”Award, and Forest City/Stapleton Vice President Landri Taylor and Filmmaker donnie l. betts of no credit productions won 2007 Trailblazer awards.
