Memorial Service Honors Community Leader, Activist

A community wide memorial service honoring Wilma M. Taylor will be held on Thursday, Sept. 6, at 6 p.m. at Shorter AME Church, 3100 Richard Allen Court in Denver. Taylor served as a dedicated civic, community and political leader in Denver for more than 30 years. Much of her professional life was spent in local government, as an aide to Councilman Bill Roberts and as an appointed official serving with Mayor Wellington Webb. She was a co-founder and twice served as president of the Colorado Black Women for Political Action, and co-founded the African-American Voter Registration and Information Project. Taylor received the Colorado ACLU Carl Whitehead Memorial Award for Lifetime Contributions to Civil Liberties in 2005.  Additional honors include Woman of Distinction by the Mile Hi Council of Girl Scouts and serving as a mayoral appointee to the Denver Women's Commission. Taylor died on June 7 while visiting her family in Toledo, Ohio. The community is invited to join her family, friends and colleagues in this memorial service in honor of her life and legacy.

Darrell Anderson Raises Funds For Italian Exhibition
Denver Artist Darrell Anderson has been invited to the Beinnale Internazionale Florence, Italy in December 2007. Anderson is seeking support to help him attend the prestigious gathering of artists from around the world. To act on this new challenge and represent his constituency, he needs to raise funds to cover various expenses such as an entry fee, shipping works of art to Italy, airfare for him and his assistant, and accommodations. Anderson trained at the Art Students League of Denver and University of Colorado and has exhibited throughout Colorado, including two public art projects of 8,000 foot square mosaic floors at the Denver International Airport Concourse A and the Stations in the RTD MAC rail station, a mosaic in the University of Northern Colorado's music library, the Fort Collins Mosaic Mural sponsored by the Boys and Girl Club, the Aurora Community Mosaic Mural and the Five Points Media Center Mural in Denver.

DMMDT Presents 27th Annual Show And Sale
The Denver Museum of Miniatures, Dolls and Toys will hold its 27th Annual Fall Show and Sale at the Cherry Creek Hotel, Movies! Miniatures! And Dolls! Oh My!, Sept. 7 – 9. Workshops will be held Friday and Saturday at various times throughout the day. The Sale Room and Exhibit spaces will be open Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Show and Sale will have opportunities for the entire family and will include a workshop specifically designed for children featuring a miniature "picnic in the park" theme. Harvest Of Hope Oct. 11
The Sixth Annual Harvest of Hope will be on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 5 p.m. in the Donald R. Seawell Ballroom of the Denver Center for Performing Arts. Funds raised from this year’s program will focus on “Durable Solutions for Displaced People.” One out of 55 people in Africa is a refugee, an internally displaced person, asylum seeker, or stateless person as a result of war, persecution, economic change, or disaster. John Bul Dau from the film God Grew Tired of Us featuring the Lost Boys of Sudan will be the keynote speaker. The evening will also have a silent auction featuring African cuisine, music, and dance and a large array of African jewelry, artworks, statues and textiles. The auction will include art by local artist Ken Elliott.

Colorado Girl Raising Awareness And Money For AfricAid
Recognizing the hardships of the African people and wanting to help, Ashley Shuyler founded a nonprofit organization less than six years ago to educate and empower young girls in Africa. The fundraiser, “In Worlds Apart, United by Art: A Celebration of African Art,” will be held on Sept. 7 at 5:30 p.m. at the Walnut Foundry, 3002 Walnut Street in downtown Denver. The event will feature an array of wood carvings, paintings, sculpture, textiles and jewelry for sale from Africa. Also featured will be original works by prominent local African American artists. A special performance by members of Cleo Parker Robinson Dance and a live auction offering bidders an African safari vacation donated by African Eyes Travel are also on the agenda. A host bar and authentic African cuisine will be provided by Gourmet Fine Catering and M&D’s Cafe. Nilo Cruz’s Anna In The Tropics Opens Sept. 7 At Aurora Fox
Winner of the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Anna in the Tropics portrays the lives of Cuban cigar factory workers in Ybor City, Tampa, Florida.  The workers bring an exuberant humor and love of life to their craft, but the world they inhabit is about to change. The play is set in 1929, and new technology threatens to replace the Cuban workers who pride themselves on their traditional hand rolled cigar making. The play runs Sept. 7 through Oct. 7, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m at the Aurora Fox, 9900 East Colfax Ave. Admission is $24 admission for adults and $20 for students and seniors. Group rates are $18.

Banyan Tree To Hold Annual Stone Soup Celebration And Fundraiser
The Banyan Tree drummers, Whittier Neighborhood residents, employees and volunteers will hold the annual Stone Soup celebration and fundraiser Saturday, Sept. 29 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Whittier Community Center located at 29th Avenue and Downing Street. The celebration will offer food, African and Latin hand drumming, the release of a CD, which features youth drummers from Banyan Tree’s Whittier Drum Project.

September “Hike-A-Thon”
Join the 4th Annual Hike for Youth “hike-a-thon,” benefiting five environmentally-focused youth agencies in the Denver/Boulder region. On Sept. 15, hikers of all ages and abilities will hit the trails of Golden Gate Canyon State Park to raise money for programs that connect youth to the outdoors. Difficult hikes will begin at 8:30 a.m., moderate at 9 a.m. and easy hikes at 10 a.m. All hikes will end by 12 p.m. in time for the after-hike party. Top fundraisers will win prizes, gift cards, airline tickets, digital cameras and more. Adults hike for $25 and youth (ages 5-17) hike for $10. Colorado Prisons Hold Public Forum
Colorado-CURE and Colorado Department of Corrections will host a public forum Wednesday, Sept. 5, from 1p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Denver Women's Correctional Facility, 3600 Havana St., Denver. CDOC Executive Director Aristedes Zavaras and other DOC personnel will listen to concerns and answer questions. Colorado-CURE is a nonprofit organization providing information and support to 17,000 prisoners in Colorado, as well as to their families and friends. El Grito 5K 3.1 Mile Run/Walk At Historic Buckhorn Exchange Restaurant
The 14th annual El Grito 5K run and walk (3.1 miles) is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 16 at the Historic Buckhorn Exchange Restaurant,10th and Osage Light Rail Stop. The money raised goes to El Grito Runners, Inc. 501c3 scholarship fund for high school graduating seniors who have participated in cross country/track and are continuing their post-secondary education. 
The cost is $16 for pre-race registration and $20 on race day.

State Of Black Colorado Town Hall Meeting

Community radio station KGNU will celebrate three years of broadcasting in Denver at 1390 AM with the First Friday Art Walk party at the studios of KGNU and Denver Open Media in the Micro Business Development Center, 700 Kalamath St. on Friday, Sept. 7, from 6 to 9 p.m. The festivities include an open house, silent auction, free food and drinks, birthday cake, live bands and tours of KGNU and Denver Open Media. Ethnic College Counseling Center Meetings
The Ethnic College Counseling Center will begin meeting on Sept. 15 at Park Hill United Methodist Church, 5290 Montview Blvd., room 205, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Black college tour and Underground Railroad tour to Canada is scheduled for March 2008. The center is dedicated to recruiting, encouraging, training and preparing students to pursue education beyond high school. Students are recruited at all levels after the sixth grade with monitoring through high school graduation and during their undergraduate college years.

African-Caribbean Film Screenings
On Sunday, Sept. 16, at 2 .pm., Salud, a film examining the challenges of healthcare in South Africa, Gambia, Honduras and Venezuela and the help rendered by Cuban medical teams in those areas, will be screened. On Sunday, Sept. 30, at 2 p.m., Life and Debt, a film showing Jamaica as an example of the contradictions that foreign aid and international financing imposes on the developing world, will be shown. Free Nutrition And Physical Activity Classes For Seniors
Steps to Healthier Aging is a series of fun and informative classes on nutrition and physical activity for those 60 years and better. This class will be offered at Barnum Recreation Center, 360 Hooker St., Sept. 4 through Nov. 20 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Nutrition class topics include healthy eating, calcium, fiber, and label reading. Physical activity classes incorporate the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program. Exercises can be done sitting or standing. Step counters will be provided to all participants. The classes are offered through a partnership between the City and County of Denver Parks and Recreation, Denver Public Health and Volunteers of America.  The class is free, and transportation is available.

Serious Women, Serious Issues, Serious Action
The third annual conference of “Overcoming Barriers, Creating Opportunities,” a free interactive conference and gathering for low income women, women of color and young women will be held on Friday, Sept. 28, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., and Saturday, Sept. 29, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Tivoli Student Center on Denver’s Auraria Campus. The conference is designed to provide women of color, low wage women, and young women with information, resources, and tools to positively develop their own agenda about issues that affect their daily lives, including economic self sufficiency.

AIDS Walk Colorado Sept. 9
On Sunday, Sept. 9 thousands of people from all over Colorado will gather in Denver’s Cheesman Park to fight HIV as part of the 20th Annual AIDS Walk Colorado presented by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and the 2nd Annual AIDS Run. The walk benefits Colorado AIDS Project and the fundraising teams of more than 30 other AIDS service and education providers. AIDS Run Colorado is a 5k running race sanctioned by the USA Track & Field Association. Registration for both events starts at 7:30 a.m., with Opening Ceremonies kicking off at 9:30 a.m.

Become A Foster Grandparent
Volunteers of America’s Foster Grandparents are bridging the gap between seniors and youth with a program that offers opportunities for seniors to spend quality time with young people – holding infants in pediatric hospitals and singing with preschoolers, reading to schoolchildren and mentoring at-risk youth. Foster grandparents must devote 20 hours per week and be at least 60 years of age, with an income limited to $12,765 a year for a one-person household. Foster Grandparents receive a $212 tax-free monthly stipend for their service, which does not affect OAP, Medicare/Medicaid or Social Security. They receive paid vacation, sick time, holiday pay and transportation reimbursement, an annual physical exam and supplemental insurance while at their sites.

RMICC Offers $8,000 In Scholarships
The Rocky Mountain Indian Chamber of Commerce will award eight $1,000 scholarships to American Indian students at the chamber’s annual fundraising gala. The application deadline is Friday, Oct. 5. Money for the scholarship program is primarily raised through the sales of a special Colorado license plate that anyone can buy. To buy a plate for your vehicle, a small $25 donation is all it takes to support the American Indian Scholars program, as well as the usual licensing fees. Second Annual “Our Health Matters” Community Health Expo

Chapungu: Custom And Legend; A Culture In Stone
An exhibit of 57 life-affirming, deeply spiritual sculptures that celebrate the depth and wisdom of many of the traditional African cultures will be displayed at Denver Botanic Gardens from July 11 through Feb. 29, 2008. This highly expressive contemporary stone art from Zimbabwe is organized into eight themes that represent shared human relationships, emotions and experiences: The Family, Custom and Legend, Social Comment, The Role of the Elders, The Spirit World, The Role of Women, Village Life, and Nature and the Environment. The sculptures tower up to 11 feet tall and weigh between 600 and 6,000 pounds each. Programs and special events at the Gardens include classes that teach African games and crafts to children, drum making, African cooking demonstrations, sculpture classes, and opportunities to interact with artists from the exhibit through classes and presentations.

The Urban Navigator: An Amazing Race-Style Adventure
On Sept.15, Adventures For Charity will present The 2007 Urban Navigator, a race to benefit Brent’s Place, a home away from home for children with cancer and their families. The event begins at the Pepsi Center and sends teams to places throughout the Denver-metro area utilizing light rail and city transit. Participants will be put to the test as they navigate around the city and tackle various challenges competing for terrific prizes. Proceeds will benefit Brent’s Place, an organization that helps children with cancer and their families by providing low-cost housing and support programs and partnerships while they are in Denver undergoing treatment for life-threatening illnesses. The event begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Hope Communities Neighborhood Center in Five Points, where volunteers will receive their assignments and be sent out to work at various locations on projects such as painting, landscaping, deep cleaning and light construction. Tri-County Health Department Offers Free Groceries
Tri-County Health Department offers free groceries and nutrition counseling for children up to age five and to pregnant and breastfeeding women. Qualifying people must live in Adams, Arapahoe or Douglas Counties, and meet specific income guidelines. Families who receive Medicaid, Food Stamps and/or TANF are automatically eligible for WIC. Specific nutritious foods are available, including milk, cheese, eggs, cereal, peanut butter, beans and fruit juices. WIC participants are also offered personalized nutrition counseling, breastfeeding education and support, children’s immunizations, smoking cessation education and referrals to other healthcare and social service programs. The Second Annual “Our Health Matters” Community Health Expo

The Boulder County AIDS Project (BCAP) will be celebrating 22 years of service to the community with a black-tie optional fund raising dinner at the Boulderado Hotel on Sunday, Sept. 16. Ohio Wesleyan University To Stop In Denver As Part Of 'Colleges That Change Lives' Tour
On Sept. 12 from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at The Colorado Convention Center, the Ohio Wesleyan University, along with 39 other designated higher education institutions, will be in Denver as part of the Colleges That Change Lives (CTCL) annual tour. Based on former New York Times education editor Loren Pope's book, the colleges and universities are featured because of their overall impact on students' educational experiences through unique undergraduate research opportunities, study abroad experiences, and emphasis on campus involvement. All of the events, which are free to the public and do not require pre-registration, start with a panel presentation followed by a college fair where students and families can collect information from and speak directly with admission representatives from the colleges and universities included.
