The Five Points Juneteenth Celebration was held June 19 at 25th Avenue and Welton Street, and five Mr. and Ms. Juneteenth winners were selected as part of the annual festivities. Each winner was selected with information from a short biography, as well as a performance at the festival. This year’s winners are (above, from left to right): Junior Mr. Juneteenth Demetrius Graham Jr., who recited a Juneteenth poem; Little Mr. Juneteenth Noah Jones, who performed a miming act of Micah Stampley’s “Take My Life;” Little Ms. Juneteenth Jocelyn Stewart, who sang “Encourage Yourself;” Ms. Juneteenth Rebekah Johnson, a dancer with Cleo Parker Robinson Dance; and Mr. Juneteenth Cedric Johnson, who gave a speech about the importance of community.

Dale Carnegie Honors Mayor Hickenlooper
Dale Carnegie Training of Colorado, the local office of the influential global business training company with more than 95 years of operation, announced Denver Mayor John W. Hickenlooper as a recipient of the 2007 Dale Carnegie Leadership Award. Only 10 awards are presented annually worldwide, and this marks the first time that the award was given to an elected official, as opposed to a company or organization, since the award’s inception in 1985. The award was presented to Hickenlooper on June 21 on the steps of the City and County Building. The award is presented to an individual or company who is a major contributor to its country’s economy and society through a special emphasis on the development of its human resources, innovation and organizational creativity.

CBCC Adds Board Member
Public affairs executive Vanecia Kerr has joined the Colorado Black Chamber of Commerce Board. Kerr, who is the senior community affairs and marketing manager for
TIAA-CREF in Colorado, was appointed to the board in May. She joins 17 other members on the board. Chamber Board Chairman Odell Barry said Kerr's more than 15 years of experience in account management and community relations will be an asset to the Chamber's board. Chamber President, and former Denver Mayor, Wellington E. Webb is “very happy to have her on the team.”

Lutheran Medical Receives Initial Stroke Achievement Award
Exempla Lutheran Medical Center (ELMC) has received the American Stroke Association’s Get With the Guidelines-Stroke (GWTG-Stroke) Initial Achievement Award, which recognizes the hospital’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations. In order to receive this recognition, ELMC complied for 90 days with the GWTG-Stroke Program. These guidelines are a critical step in saving the lives of patients. With a stroke, time lost is brain lost, and ELMC offers the highest standard of care available to stroke patients in the United States. According to the American Stroke Association, 700,000 people suffer strokes every year, and that number is expected to rise over the next decade.

Ace Mentor Program Of Colorado Awards Scholarships
Representatives of the ACE (Architecture, Construction and Engineering) Mentor Program of Colorado announce that they have awarded 11 scholarships to Denver students for their participation in the ACE Mentor Program. The scholarship recipients are: Johnathan Barajas-Dalton, Alameda High School; Long Lin, Alameda High School; Paul Pepping, Alameda High School; Paulina Medrano, CEC/JFK High School; Jamie Novotny, CEC/JFK High School; Kerry Fessenden, East High School; Trent Kies, East High School; Theo Lind, East High School; Edmund Mills, East High School; Stephen Showalter, East High School; and Victor Reyes, West High School. The ACE Mentor Program is the fastest-growing mentoring program in the United States, with the goal of introducing high school students to the construction industry. More than 30,000 students, in 91 U.S. cities, have had an opportunity to explore the construction industry through ACE.

Catholic Charities Appoints New COO
Stephen Carattini joined the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Denver as the new Chief Operating Officer. Carattini’s duties will include the oversight of the three major program areas of housing and homelessness, mission and ministry, and family and children. He most recently was the division director for immigration, refugee and outreach services at Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. Prior to his experience at Charities, Carattini worked for 20 years in the transportation industry. He helped grow Eagle Global Logistics in Houston from a start-up company to a worldwide provider of freight forwarding and logistics services.

CSU-Pueblo Gets New Dean, Executive Director
Dr. Zav Dadabhoy has been hired as the Dean of Student Life and Development at Colorado State University – Pueblo. Zav Dadabhoy comes to Pueblo from Metropolitan State College of Denver, where he has held several positions in Student Life and Student Services. He will be the chief campus official for student services and student life, including responsibility for oversight of student fees, residence halls, student health services, outdoor programs, intramural sports and recreation, and more. Also, DenaSue Potestio, a vice president/financial consultant for Charles Schwab in Denver, has been hired as Executive Director of University Development. She will report directly to the CSU-Pueblo Foundation Board of Directors and serve as a liaison to the University. She will also provide advice, counsel and coordination for the foundation’s directors, committees and affiliated organizations.

Attorneys Honored For Contributions To Community
Five Denver Bar Association attorneys were honored for their outstanding commitment to the community and legal profession at the DBA Annual Awards Party on June 6. John Baker received the Award of Merit, the association’s highest honor. Denver County Court Presiding Judge Andrew S. Armatas and Denver Juvenile Court Judge Dana Wakefield received the two Judicial Excellence Awards. Matthew Crouch received the Young Lawyer of the Year Award. And Casie Collignon received the Volunteer Lawyer of the Year Award.

Local Girl Scout Receives Demeter Scholarship
Kirsten Sonderquist of Aurora received the 2007 Demeter Scholarship, sponsored by SmartGrowth, Inc. This $1,000 scholarship recognizes a Gold Award Girl Scout who exemplifies the best qualities of Demeter and plans to pursue a post-secondary education. Sonderquist was selected as this year’s recipient because of the high quality and impact of her Gold Project “Reading for Fun,” which she completed in the spring of 2006. Throughout this project, she worked with the Sunrise/Sunset Group of Aurora, where she worked with children after school on their reading skills. Through advanced research, she determined that combining reading with activities for children helps to improve their fine motor skills, eye-hand coordination skills and memory.

Mitchell Recognized As Emerging Leader
Tashmesia Mitchell, a third-generation Coloradoan and former Denver Public Schools teacher, has been recognized by the National Youth Leadership Council as an Emerging Leader who has demonstrated a commitment to making a difference in the lives of young people, schools and communities. Mitchell is taking part in the Service-Learning Emerging Leaders Initiative, which seeks to expand the current leadership on the service-learning field to include a new generation of young, more culturally diverse leaders. Across the nation, a select group of professionals will be using service-learning to address structural issues of race, class, power and access in disempowered communities. Mitchell is a member of the FrontRange Earth Force on the Professional Development and Technical Assistance Team.

Children's Museum Board Grows
The Children's Museum of Denver announced the addition of two board members, David Licko and Susan Brown. Licko is the Senior VP of Finance and the CFO of the Denver Newspaper Agency. He is the former VP of Finance and Group Controller for Indianapolis Newspapers, Inc. He has served on the Boards of the Indianapolis 500 Festival, the Children’s Bureau of Indianapolis, the Rotary Club of Indianapolis and the National 4-H Council. Brown is founder and president of The Boppy Company, and inventor of the Boppy, a crescent lap pillow for nursing mothers. Prior to her invention, she was the Executive Vice President and Director of Account Services for Evans Group Advertising in Denver. She is also currently the Director for the Colorado Economic Fund.

McClinon Releases Hip Replacement Work-Out DVDs
Rudy McClinon Jr., with R-U-A-Pro Fitness LLC, has released a post-op exercise DVD, “Life After Hip-Replacement,” designed to aid in the healing process after hip replacement (arthroplasty) or hip surgery. This is an exercise program that continues where rehabilitation stops. The DVD features 12 physician-approved exercises, and comes with a 16-page illustrated color booklet. This exercise program will improve overall leg strength, balance and function, and promote independence. This video is endorsed by Dr. Richard P. Evans, Director of the Center for Hip and Knee Surgery, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Orthopedic Surgery Department. Dr Evans operated on Rudy's right hip in 2000. A second DVD, "Let's Get Moving," is a fun, low-impact aerobic exercise DVD for all ages. This 30-minute program includes a warm-up, a 20-minute aerobic and strength training segment, and a cool down session.
