Hunger Artists Presents Letters To Home

The Hunger Artists Ensemble Theatre presents Letters To Home, an original reader’s theatre production consisting of historic war letters written to the families of soldiers. The show runs through July 7 at the Byers-Evans House Museum, 1310 Bannock St. in Denver. Each emotional letter is tied to Colorado in a unique way. Letters To Home was conceived, adapted and directed by Hunger Artists member Maggie Cochran. Keith Schrum of the Colorado History Museum provided the letters from its extensive collection of Colorado literature. Letters To Home is presented in support of the U.S.O. Seating is limited and reservations are highly recommended. Tickets are $16, with a $2 discount for seniors, students, military, wheelchair patrons, groups of 10 or more, and Colorado Theatre Guild members.

AARP Seeks Volunteers
By 2010, one in three workers will be over the age of 50. To accommodate this increase, AARP has created the WorkSearch Program, and is looking for volunteers to be Information Navigators. The WorkSearch Program will provide community-level job and career information and services to individuals who are seeking to remain in, or reenter, the workforce. The program provides a variety of services, including interest and ability inventories, skill assessments, information about the community job market, and connections to local training and employment opportunities at no cost to the individual. Information Navigators will assist the job seekers either with the use of the system or with completing paper copies of the tool and entering that information into the system.

ACC Treats Public To Big Band Concert July 31
Arapahoe Community College (ACC) will host The Windjammers on July 31 at 6 p.m. The Windjammers is a versatile 18-piece big band that performs selections from the music genres of Broadway, Swing, Waltz, Rumba and more. As part of their act, the band members impersonate past celebrities such as Elvis and the Blues Brothers. The show will be held on the West Lawn of ACC’s Littleton Campus, 5900 S. Santa Fe Dr. The event is free to the public.

ArtReach And BGCMD Present Patchwork Of Life
The Patchwork of Life exhibit will be held July 6-27 at NOW ArtSpace at 3977 Tennyson St. in Denver. The exhibit features a tapestry created by youth encompassing their cultural history, heritage and natural surroundings. This ArtReach project took place at the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Denver (BGCMD), Cope Branch at 808 Inca in Denver. During the 12-week project, 36 youth learned about the history of quilting and photography, traditional and digital photographic techniques, and sewing. Translations Gallery will also exhibit Patchwork of Life on Aug. 3-17.

CAAP Hosts Summer College Workshop
The Center for African American Policy at the University of Denver will host its annual summer college workshop, Going the Distance…Navigating the Road to College, on August 3–5 on the DU campus. The workshop is intended for African-American high school students from the Denver metropolitan area. The concurrent sessions will feature topics on how to get ready for college; financial aid, ACT/SAT testing. General sessions will include team building, health, a historic reenactment, tips on interviewing for college admission, public speaking, and essay writing. The application fee is $50, is non-refundable and includes all meals during the workshop, accommodations in the university dormitories, all meeting sessions and one outside activity.

Colorado Political Leaders Fellowship
The Center for Progressive Leadership is offering fellowships to a nine-month leadership training, coaching and mentoring program. The application deadline is July 16. A group of diverse leaders from around the state will be selected for this comprehensive, part-time training and mentoring program, designed to accelerate your political career. The 2007-2008 fellowship begins in late August and goes through April 2008. The sessions will focus on political leadership skills like personal strategic planning, honing your personal vision, fundraising and delivering a compelling message. Payment plans and scholarships are available to help with the program fee.

Colorado Women's Hall Of Fame Seeks Nominations
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2008 inductees into the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame. Women of diverse backgrounds -- pioneers to politicians, educators to entrepreneurs -- are inducted into the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame every even-numbered year. The Colorado Women's Hall of Fame inducts women, both historical and contemporary, with significant ties to Colorado who, during their lifetimes, made significant and enduring contributions to their fields of endeavor, elevated the status of women, helped open new frontiers for women and for society, and inspired others by their example. Nomination deadline is Aug. 29.

Community Sharing Time On July 6
Celebration of Families-Students Inc. will sponsor a Community Sharing Time about an educational tour in South Dakota, presented by participants from the June program. The public is invited to this community event at St. Luke CME Church, 3444 Madison St., on Friday, July 6 at 10:30 a.m. The educational tour was a chance for a group of 80 seniors and youth to experience and learn about the history and geography of Lead, South Dakota and the Black Hills area, as well as serving as a bonding between the two generations.

Denver Book Mall Signings July 1
The Denver Book Mall (32 Broadway in Denver, 303-733-3808) will host two authors on Sunday, July 1, at 3 p.m. Carol Ann Kates will sign her new cookbook, Corner Market Secret Recipes, and Randi Levin will sign her new cookbook, Sharing Mountain Recipes. DIC Hosts Community Conversations
The Denver Integration Coalition will be holding two of four community conversations, “Denver Defines Integration,” to talk to Denver residents and community stakeholders on integration for its Supporting Immigrant and Refugee Families Initiative plan. The SIRFI project provides funding to 19 Colorado communities in their efforts to support immigrants and “established” residents in working together for strong, healthy communities. Two of the four events were held in June. The other two will be: July 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Ellis Elementary School, 1651 S. Dahlia St. in Denver; and July 26 from 6 to 9 p.m. at 2285 S. Federal Blvd. in Denver. Events are free and open to the public. Food, child care and interpretation will be provided.

Groups Available For Adult Survivors Of Childhood Sexual Abuse
WINGS provides therapist-facilitated support groups in which survivors are believed, accepted, and no longer alone. There are men's groups and women's groups, meeting throughout the Denver Metro area. Groups meet in the evenings Monday through Thursday and on Saturday mornings.

Children’s Museum Introduces New 9-1-1 Safety Exhibit
The Children’s Museum of Denver announced the grand opening of a new, interactive 9-1-1 safety exhibit. The new installation is designed to teach children how and when to dial 9-1-1 for emergency assistance. The exhibit is an extension of the museum’s Fire Station No. 1, which includes a real fire truck children can explore. The exhibit allows adults and children to use interactive graphics to identify emergency situations, simulate calls to 9-1-1, and practice conversations that kids might have with emergency responders.

Chicken & Beans Youth Flag Football Tournament
Who has the best Youth Football Program in Colorado? Come find out at the Chicken & Beans 7 on 7 Youth Flag Football Pre Season Tournament, Aug. 3-5, at Falcon Park (Maxwell and Crown Blvd. in Montbello). Friday games start at 6 p.m. Sat & Sun games 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The championship game’s location will be announced on Sunday. This is a double-elimination tournament, with first- and second-place trophies for each age group. Limit 14 players per team, no less than nine. No high school players. Cirque Du Soleil Benefits Urban Peak Youth
With a very unique act of generosity, Cirque du Soleil has provided the Urban Peak youth program with a large group of tickets to the July 12 performance of its new smash show, Corteo, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting Urban Peak programs, serving young homeless and at-risk people. Tickets include a pre-party, sponsored by the Consulate General of Canada, and a parking pass. From its inception, Cirque du Soleil has been committed to helping at-risk youth. The pre-party will be at Brooklyn’s bar and restaurant, at 9th Avenue and Auraria Boulevard, and begins at 5:30 p.m. The show begins at 8 p.m. under the big top in the Pepsi Center parking lot. CPR Dance Presents 13th Annual ISDI
Celebrating its 13th year, the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance International Summer Dance Institute (ISDI) honors the tradition of "One Spirit, Many Voices" by bringing master teachers from around the world to Denver, June 18 through July 20. The four-week artist-in-residence program is grounded in CPR’s vision to create an environment that embraces diversity, and cultivates personal and artistic development for all ages, cultures and levels of technique. The program features a week-long day camp for children, ages 5-12, and four weeks of intensive training for students age 13 and older.

Crossroads Theatre Presents Three Viewings
Set in a mid-western funeral parlor, Three Viewings, written by Jeffrey Hatcher and directed by Terry Dodd, features three funny and poignant stories about death, love and thievery. In Tell-Tale, we meet Emil, the underwhelming, mild-mannered undertaker who must speak of his passion - just not out loud. The Thief of Tears is Mac, a Los Angeles drifter with a very unique occupation. Thirteen Things About Ed Carpolotti is the story of Virginia, the charming widow of the wheeler-dealer contractor with a questionable past. Three Viewings opens July 6 and plays Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. through Aug. 4 at the new Crossroads Theatre (27th and Welton in Denver). Tickets are $15, two-for-one on Thursday.

This month, Bonfils Blood Center will be hosting community blood drives, on the Bonfil’s Blood Drive Bus, throughout the metropolitan area. Denver Poets Day July 7
Denver Poets Day is a semi-annual event sponsored by poets for all the community. Denver Poets day first began in 1976, and was resurrected in 1999. Poets Day has featured poets such as Thomas Hornsbee Ferrell, Allan Ginsberg, Anne Waldman and James Ryan Morris. This year, Denver Poets Day will be held July 7, from noon to 8 p.m., at Cheeseman Park in the Greek Amphitheater. This event is free the public. DMMDT Holds Harry Potter Teas, Exhibits, More
The Denver Museum of Miniatures, Dolls and Toys (1880 Gaylord St. in Denver) presents Harry Potter-themed teas, workshops and exhibits July 14, 15, 21, and 22. DOCA Presents Performing Arts Development Workshop

YMCA And Radio Disney Host Healthy Kids Day

This family day will help introduce families to healthy lifestyles in a free, fun and interactive atmosphere. Jordan AME Church 50th Anniversary
The Jordan AME Church will hold its 50th anniversary fundraising luncheon celebration July 28 at the DoubleTree Hotel, Quebec Street and MLK Boulevard in Denver, at 11:30 a.m. The keynote speaker will be Pastor Jesse Brown Jr. from the Payne Chapel AME in Colorado Springs. Spirituals Project Hosts Free Film Nights
The Spirituals Project continues its free summer film series with The Songs Are Free: Bernice Johnson Reagon and African-American Music, to be shown Saturday, July 14, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Iliff School of Theology Great Hall, 2201 S University Blvd. Reagon, founder of the musical group Sweet Honey in the Rock, historian, and curator of the Community Life Division of the Smithsonian Institution, discusses with Bill Moyers how Black music has shaped the African-American experience and identity. Live musical performances, educational workshops and archival footage of Reagon and noted Civil Rights leaders are highlighted. Northwest Rail Public Meetings
The Regional Transportation District (RTD) FasTracks program is initiating the Northwest Rail environmental study. The Northwest Rail Corridor is a proposed 41-mile commuter rail corridor from Denver Union Station to Longmont via Boulder, passing through Adams County, Westminster, Broomfield, Louisville, Boulder, and Longmont. The public is invited to attend the following public meeting to give comments and questions to the project team. The first meeting will be July 9 at the Spice of Life Event Center (5706 Arapahoe Ave. in Boulder). The second meeting will be July 11 at the Westminster City Park Recreation Center (10455 Sheridan Blvd.). The third meeting will be July 12 at the Xilinx Learning Center (1951 S. Fordham St. in Longmont). All meetings are from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

The Hispanic Chamber Education Foundation (HCEF) is now taking nominations for its Excellence in Education awards, to be presented at this year's 12th Annual Fiesta Colorado on Saturday, Oct. 6. Since 2005, the HCEF has recognized individuals and organizations committed to education in the Hispanic community through the award.
