“Café Nuba” Hosts National Slam Champions Through 2006
The award-winning poetry, open mic and slam set, “Café Nuba: It’s Hot & it’s Black,” produced by BluBlak Media for the Pan African Arts Society, heats up Five Points at the Mercury Café (2199 California St., Denver), every last Friday from 8 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Café Nuba features national and international poets, authors, musicians and visual artists, plus an open mic with resident deejay DJ S.D, emcee Day Acoli and curator/host Ashara Ekundayo. The Colorado Historical Society celebrates the Denver Art Museum building opening with free days, two-for-one admission, new family programs and more at the Colorado History Museum (CHM) and Byers-Evans House Museum (BEHM). Denver Pan African Film Festival Now Accepting Entries
The Denver Pan African Film Festival (DPAFF), produced by the Pan African Arts Society, is now accepting films for its 8th annual festival, a seven-day event slated for April 23 to 29, 2007, including film screenings, panels, parties and the “hip-hopcentric” “BrownSuga Fest” for youth. Juried & Audience Film Awards are given for Best Feature, Best Documentary, Best Short Film, and Best Student offerings. Deadlines are January 31 on time, Feb. 15 late entry. Two Art Show Openings From Sankofa Arts Alliance
The Sankofa Arts Alliance presents "Conversations in Cloth," an art show featuring work by Dawn Williams Boyd, Mary Madison and Deidre Hardin. The opening reception will be Saturday, Oct. 7 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the third floor gallery of the Blair Caldwell African-American Research Library in the historic Five Points, 2401 Welton St., Denver. First African-American Woman In Space And Former Clinton Cabinet Member To Deliver CSU Diversity Conference Keynotes Oct. 3 And 4
Colorado State University will present Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman in space, and Henry Cisneros, who served as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President Clinton, as keynote speakers for the 2006 Diversity Conference. To be held Oct. 3 to 5 at CSU’s Lory Student Center, Jemison will speak at 7 p.m. on Oct. 3, and Cisneros will speak at 7 p.m. on Oct. 4. The 2006 Diversity Conference will feature a lineup of speakers who have a powerful influence on advancing cultural diversity in America. The conference also offers workshops for the public and high school students on a variety of topics as well as university dialogues on immigration issues. This event is free and open to the public.

Citizenship Classes And Study Sessions For Citizenship Test
The Denver Public Library will be presenting four one-time classes on citizenship. Classes are aimed at helping prospective citizens understand and study for their citizenship tests. Double Your Harvest Fun At 18th Annual Pumpkin Festival
For the first time ever, the Pumpkin Festival at Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield will be a two-day event! Thousands of pumpkins will be ripe for the picking in the 10-acre pumpkin patch on Saturday, Oct. 14 and Sunday, Oct.15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Many activities will surround the search for that perfect pumpkin, including hayrides, barrel train rides for children, and dozens of vendors offering unique crafts and concessions. Sorority Offers ACT Test Practice
The Denver Alumnae Chapter of Delta sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is sponsoring two free sessions to help students prepare for the ACT test. ELK Hosts Silent Auction And Celebrity Golf Tournament
Environmental Learning for Kids is auctioning off more than 50 fantastic items to benefit science and natural resource programs for youth in the Denver metro area. Fire Safety And Prevention Week Family Free Day
At the Denver Fire Fighter’s Museum, this year’s campaign targets the leading cause of home fires and injuries—cooking. More home fires start in the kitchen than anywhere else. In fact, cooking is involved in over 10,000 home fires each year. The Spirituals Project to sing at Saint John’s Cathedral
Saint John’s will host the celebrated Spirituals Project choir on Oct. 22 at 4 p.m. at the Cathedral at 1350 Washington St., Denver, for a concert entitled Songs of Freedom. The Spirituals Project will sing African American spirituals first sung by enslaved Africans in America during the 18th and 19th centuries. The diverse 75-member choir draws from an array of ethnic backgrounds, ages and spiritual traditions. The choir is an ambassador for the Spirituals Project based at the University of Denver. One of the parts of the Project’s work is to educate audiences about how African American spirituals uplift in times of crisis by healing, comforting, inspiring and instilling hopes and dreams. Families Hone Acting Skills At DCPA’s Free Target Family Fun Forum
On Sunday Oct. 29 from 12 to 2 p.m., the Denver Center Theatre Academy, an education department of The Denver Center for the Performing Arts, hosts the Target Family Fun Forum, an interactive afternoon for parents and kids alike in the Historic Tramway building (1101 13th St., Denver). Animation Voice Acting Workshop Led By Porky Pig
The Denver Center Theatre Academy’s Fall acting session, beginning Oct. 2, features a two-day voice animation workshop with Bob Bergen (a.k.a. the voice of Porky Pig). Known for his voice animation in Tarzan, A Bug’s Life, Toy Story and as Porky Pig for Warner Brothers among many others, Bergen will lead participants in a two-day workshop on voice animation. This is a rare opportunity for area acting professionals to learn from Mr. Bergen as he only teaches outside of Hollywood on an extremely limited basis. Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods, Inc., (CHUN) announces the People’s Fair Image Contest for the 2007 Fair. Local artists, including students, are encouraged to submit an original image encompassing the following themes: community, celebration, urban, diversity and neighborhoods. VNA Offers “Drive-Thru” Flu Shots
This fall the Visiting Nurse Association is offering a chance for people to pull into the parking lot and drive away vaccinated for flu. On Saturday, Oct. 7, from 9 a.m. to 1p.m. at the VNA office (390 Grant Ave., Denver), VNA licensed Registered Nurses will be giving flu shots to drivers and adult passengers. Each shot costs $25. Four simple stations, one shot, and complimentary coffee from Starbucks and a bagel from Moe’s Bakery is delivered to the front seat of the car. Each person will pull away with a sticker that says, “I fought the flu with the VNA.”
