The African-American Leadership Institute (AALI) Presents Inaugural Seminar Series
The African-American Leadership Institute will present a three part Leadership seminar series. The first seminar will feature Dr. Brenda J. Allen Chair Dept. of Communication, University of Colorado Denver And Health Sciences Center, and Kevin D. May principal of Ascend Human and Organizational Development Company.
The seminar will assists participants in imagining and experiencing the life they were born to live, and to act courageously in bringing that life to fruition right in the communities that they love.

Salute To Seniors Slated For May
The 17th Annual Salute To Seniors will be held on Wed., May 10 at the Colorado Convention Center in downtown Denver. Two ballroom shows at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. will feature Arthur Duncan (from the Lawrence Welk Show) and an orchestra. Mayor John Hickenlooper will be guest speaker.
Over100 plus booths in a second ballroom will offer information, services and products for seniors plus give-aways. General admission is $7. Additional tickets are $3.50.

"Voice Dance" Coming In June

Vendors And Entertainers Needed For Juneteenth Event
The Planning Committee for the 2006 Denver Juneteenth Festival  is seeking vendors and entertainers. This year’s event, will be Saturday, June 17, in Five Points. Vendors wanted include artists of all mediums, retail owners, caterers, individual food vendors, and restaurant owners.  Community organizations are encouraged to participate.
Performers wanted include gospel, jazz, and soul artists, spoken word and dramatic presentations, and comedic artists.

Sankova Arts Collective Show Opens
The Sankofa Arts Collective presents “Paper Works,” featuring work by two members of the collective with an opening reception Saturday, May 13 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Blair Caldwell African American Research Library at 2401 Welton St. in Denver. Colorado Children's Chorale Holding Auditions
The Colorado Children's Chorale will be holding auditions for their training choirs throughout the month of May at The Colorado Children’s Chorale Office, located at 2420 W. 26th Ave., in Denver. The Colorado Children's Chorale gives children the opportunity to participate in the Chorale’s concert series and perform with leading local musical organizations such as the Colorado Symphony, the National Repertory Orchestra, Opera Colorado and the Central City Opera. Athletics and Beyond Hosts Football Clinic
Athletics and Beyond will host a football clinic and workshop at Montbello High School in Denver from Friday, May 26 through Sunday, May 28. The clinic has two goals: 1) enhance athletic performance for young adults between the ages of 7 and 14 by teaching them the fundamentals of football, and 2) increase knowledge of careers in athletics for young adults between the ages of 11 and 18. Cost is $75 per player for three days.

Self-Defense For Women
The Rape Assistance and Awareness Program (RAAP) offers Personal Safety Skills for Women classes on Mondays and Wednesdays, May 15, 17, 22 and 24, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church, 1980 Dahlia St. in Denver. Participants learn effective physical, verbal and psychological protection techniques to fend off an attack. The course is appropriate for all women and girls age 13 and older, regardless of strength or physical ability, and are attended and taught exclusively by women.

Summer College Workshop
The Center for African American Policy at the University of Denver will host its annual Summer College Workshop: Surviving and Thriving -- What You Need To Know About College, Friday, August 4 through Sunday, August 6 on the University of Denver campus. The workshop is for African American high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors from the Aurora and Denver metropolitan area. 
The concurrent sessions will feature such topics as: How to Get Ready for College; Financial Aid, ACT/SAT Testing and the general sessions will include Building Leadership Skills, Getting off to the Right Start…For a Successful Finish, Successfully Interviewing for Admissions, Essay Writing, Racial Tolerance and Empowerment Sessions. The Summer College Workshop will include all meals and accommodations in the university dormitories.  Deadline for completed applications to be received is June 1.

Denver Botanic Gardens Marks National Wildflower Awareness Week  
Denver Botanic Gardens will host tours and educational activities to raise awareness about the importance of conserving Colorado’s native wildflowers during its 8th Annual Celebrating Wildflowers event, May 20 to 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Denver Botanic Gardens, 1005 York Street in Denver, as well as tours of satellite site Centennial Gardens, which will be offered both days. Grant-Humphreys Mansion Mother’s Day Tea And Tour

Conference On Genocide And Crimes Against Humanity                                  
The Colorado Coalition for Genocide Awareness and Action is sponsoring Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity: Challenges and Actions, Monday, May 8, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Adam’s Mark Hotel, 1550 Court Place in Denver culminating with a rally at 4:30 p.m. at the Colorado State Capitol. The conference, will feature notable local, national and international speakers, and will take place to educate Coloradans about genocides past and present, create awareness to eradicate complacency among our citizens and encourage citizens to take the necessary actions to save Darfur today and help prevent future genocides.  Fees of $50 for adults and $20 for students will include continental breakfast, lunch and conference materials.

Risk Exhibition To Address Drug Abuse
Youth ages 11 to 17 designed Risk to address the use and abuse of drugs, alcohol and tobacco. Annual Job Fair for People with Disabilities Slated for May 4
The annual Job Fair for People with Disabilities is scheduled for May 4, from 8 a.m. to noon, at the Colorado Convention Center, 13th and Welton in downtown Denver. An employer’s recognition and awards luncheon will follow. Past job fairs have attracted more than 600 qualified job seekers and an average of 50 or more employers and Denver area resource agencies. Guides for the visually impaired, interpreters for the deaf and other accommodations will be provided.

ADL Hosts Multicultural Cowboy Film Night
The Anti-Defamation League's Partners-In-Leadership Institute will present Reel Cowboys: A Multicultural Cinema Roundup on Thursday, May 18. The event will feature three short films about cowboys who do not fit stereotypes: Song of a Jewish Cowboy, Beers, Steers and Queers and The Federation of Black Cowboys. Reel Cowboys will include a reception, movie viewing and a panel discussion. Black Journalists Awarding Scholarships
The Colorado Association of Black Journalists is now accepting applications for its 2006-2007 journalism scholarships. Outstanding African-American journalism students from Colorado are encouraged to apply for scholarship dollars to be used toward expenses at an accredited higher-education institution. CABJ will also award the Reynelda Muse Journalism Scholarship to an outstanding African-American college student working toward a degree in television journalism. CABJ’s remaining scholarships will be awarded to African-American students majoring in other areas of journalism/communications. All applicants must submit an application, two letters of recommendation, a current photo and an official college or high school transcript along with a letter of acceptance or proof of current college enrollment. Applications must be mailed to CABJ Scholarship Committee, P.O. Box 48192, Denver, CO 80204. The deadline to receive completed application packets is Friday, June 16.

United Church of Montbello Presents Annual Women’s Day Program
The United Church of Montbello will celebrate its Annual Women’s Day Celebration on May 21. Denver Parks And Recreation Seeks Temporary Help For Summer
Denver Parks and Recreation is hiring various positions for youth ages 14 and up. Those interested are invited to attend a job fair on Saturday, May 13, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Hiawathia Davis Recreation Center, 3334 Holly St. in Denver or Rude Recreation Center, 2855 W. Holden Pl., in Denver. Candidates will complete an application and interviews will follow. If you have a driver’s license, you must bring a copy of your Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) report with you. The DMV report must have been issued within the last two weeks. Help Your Letter Carrier Help Those In Need
The 12th Annual National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Food Drive will be held on Saturday, May 13, in metro Denver. Members from the two branches of the NALC at local post offices will team up with the U.S. Postal Service, the AFL-CIO and Food Bank of the Rockies to help needy families. All households in Metro Denver are asked to put non-perishable food by their mailboxes. Letter Carriers will collect the food as they make their mail deliveries and Food Bank of the Rockies will distribute it to agencies feeding the hungry.

Su Teatro’s Seminal Work, Serafín, Returns
Serafín: Cantos y Lagrimas, the award-winning play that launched the past 17 consecutive seasons of theatre at El Centro Su Teatro. Angel Mendez-Soto, will portray  the title character. Laura Cuetara, artistic director of the University of Colorado at Denver Theatre, Film, and Video Production Department, will direct. Serafín, based loosely on the diaries of Su Teatro resident playwright Tony Garcia’s father, chronicles one man’s journey from immigrant worker to labor organizer, spiraling into his final abyss as a homeless alcoholic. The Anti-Defamation League will honor three families for "Passing the Torch" of community service at its 2006 Torch of Liberty Awards Dinner, at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 31, in the Seawell Ballroom in downtown Denver. The evening includes cocktails and a silent auction followed by dinner and a multi-media award presentation. ADL's Torch of Liberty award recognizes parents who pass humanitarian values on to their children. First Annual Freedom Conference Opens
First Annual Freedom Conference, presented by It Takes a Village, will help men reentering society from incarceration address issues that impact their freedom, including substance abuse, HIV prevention, employment, housing, and relationship issues. Sorority Hosts Spring Operetta
Internationally known soprano, Nora Bailiff Robinson is performing a benefit concert “A String of Pearls”  for the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Epsilon Nu Omega Chapter to honor its 50-years-plus-members and to raise funds to publish the chapter’s history. Beckwourth Mountain Club To Hold Bike Ride
The James P. Beckwourth Mountain Club (JPBMC) will hold its second annual bike ride fundraiser Pedal the Platte at the Denver REI Flagship Store on Saturday, May 27. The event includes a 10 and 30 mile bike ride and is open to bike riders of all skill. There is also a special group rate for riders.  Register four riders and the fifth rider's registration is free.  All five registration forms must be submitted together via mail to the JPBMC office. Before May 12, registration for adults is $25 and $20 for children 12 and under. After May 12, registration increases by $5. Gently Used Men’s Suits Needed
The Colorado Association of Ministers’ Wives and Ministers’ Widow (CAMWMW) is requesting donations of men’s suits to benefit The Road Called Strate organization. This non- profit provides assistance and support to men in our community who are transitioning from previous incarceration and other significant life changes. Bring your gently used suits to the Mt. Free Health And Enrollment Fair For The Uninsured
A Health and Enrollment Fair will be held Wednesday, May 3, from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Church in the City, 1530 Josephine St. in Denver for uninsured adults and children. Morehouse College Glee Club Presents Concert
On Saturday night, May 6 at 7:30 p.m. the Morehouse College Glee Club will appear in concert at the New Hope Baptist Church, 3701 Colorado Blvd. in Denver. The group will sing choral music from several genres of musical literature, including classical literature, spirituals, African folk songs and their world famous African folk song, Betelehemu. The Morehouse College Quartet will also participate. This performance is sponsored by The Alphonse Robinson African American Musicians Association, The Colorado Morehouse Alumni and The Spirituals Project. Free Mammogram And Pap Test
During May, the Colorado Women’s Cancer Control Initiative and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will celebrate National Women’s Health Check–Up by providing free Mammogram and Pap tests. To be eligible, you must be: 40 years of age or older for Pap test; 50 to 64 years of age for mammogram; uninsured or underinsured; and have not had a Mammogram or Pap test in a year.

Attention Teen Girls: A Summer Of Adventure Awaits You
Girl Scouts, the world’s leading authority on girls, is offering a day camp program for teen girls (ages 11 and older by June 1) who enjoy the arts with The Other Side Arts in Denver this summer. You do not have to be currently enrolled in Girl Scouts to attend camp – it is open to all girls.  
Art Everywhere! Camp with The Other Side Arts will be held from June 19 to 23, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The camp programs are designed to help teenage girls achieve their full potential by developing courage, confidence and character. Cost is $150 a week (or $30 a day). Financial assistance is also available. If your daughter is not a member of the Girl Scouts, an extra $10 registration fee, makes her a Girl Scout. Girl Scouts offers overnight adventures for teen girls at two camps in nearby mountain communities. Teen girls have the opportunity to participate in traditional camp activities, such as hiking, cooking-out and singing.
