He was barely old enough to drive while figuring out the distribution route for the Urban Spectrum. And his brother, who was only 11, often called me stranger when I returned home from work after putting in many hours of production time during deadline. That was 1987.

Today, 19 years later, Lawrence and Donald are grown, and now I enjoy spending time with my grandsons and watching their growth and development.

Where did the time go for US? Find out in this issue. Managing editor Iya Ta’Shia Asanti, reveals the birth, growth and development and future plans for US with “Urban Spectrum Celebrates 19 Years: A Legacy in Publishing Excellence with More to Come.”

This month we are facing challenging and changing times. With new contributors and supporters, the Urban Spectrum continues to evolve. And, it is all good.

Stories on changes and challenges are shared on many of the pages this month. Sam Omatseye talks about the challenges Shani Davis overcame before and after winning at the Winter Olympics. Sam also reveals how native Africans are changing the look of sports in America. James Ainsworth looks at how specialized programs help build diversity and overcome adversities at the Denver School of the Arts. Read about two local comedians and their plans for the near future.

As we enter our 20th year of publishing Denver’s premier community newspaper -- with a new look -- on behalf of everyone here at the Denver Urban Spectrum, we thank you for your continued support and invite you to join us for our 19th anniversary celebration on April 19.

Happy reading!
