American Legacy Magazine Hosts First Men Of Honor Awards
New York, NYAmerican Legacy, the magazine of African-American history and culture, will host its First Annual Men of Honor & Distinction Awards ceremony Thursday, Nov. 9 in New York City. The honorees are: David Dinkins, the first and only African-American mayor of New York City; Earl Graves, creator of the successful publishing venture Black Enterprise; John Hope Franklin, author of From Slavery to Freedom; Willie Mays, player for the 1954 New York Giants and Baseball Hall of Fame inductee; and Bill Russell, former coach of the Boston Celtics and Basketball Hall of Fame inducteee. New York's WCBS 2 TV News Anchor Maurice DuBois will be the event's host.

Coors Supports Bank Of America Atlanta Football Classic
Golden, CO – Coors Brewing Company announced it will sponsor the upcoming Bank of America Atlanta Football Classic, featuring Tennessee State University (TSU) Tigers and Florida A&M University (FAMU) Rattlers. Coors has been a major sponsor of the popular Classic between two historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) for most of the event's 18-year history. The Bank of America Atlanta Football Classic is organized by The 100 Black Men of Atlanta, Inc. to benefit Project Success, the organization's post-secondary preparation and tuition assistance program for at-risk youth.

GSK Sponsors HIVMA Program
Toronto, Canada – GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has pledged more than $200,000 in support of the HIV Medicine Association’s (HIVMA) Minority Clinical Fellowship Program. The program will help provide high quality HIV training for physicians, particularly African-American and Latino physicians, who serve in communities at risk. GSK’s support will assist HIVMA in their effort to help promising young minority physicians, who may not otherwise find funding, gain clinical HIV experience and expertise by completing an additional year of training in HIV medicine.  HIVMA will award the grants to individuals who have an interest in HIV medicine and who intend to practice medicine in minority communities.

Tom Joyner Joins Line Up For Comedy Festival
New York, NY – Tom Joyner, the nationally syndicated media personality, announced that he is hosting a star-studded night as part of The Comedy Festival (TCF) at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas on Nov. 15. Tom Joyner's Oh Oh Oh Comedy Show will feature Mike Epps, Mo'Nique, Damon Wayans and Katt Williams along with Joyner sidekick, J. Anthony Brown, as part of the second annual TCF, presented by HBO and AEG Live. Joyner's event is part of the five-day extravaganza culminating with 'Comic Relief 2006', co-hosted by Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams. All proceeds from Comic Relief 2006 will benefit the rebuilding of New Orleans and the victims of Katrina.

BET Hip-Hop Awards Premieres Nov. 15

Philadelphia Ad Exec Named Speaker Of The Year

Washington, DC – Eileen A. Olds, an African American female judge of the Chesapeake, VA Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court, was elected as President-Elect of the American Judges Association (AJA) at the annual conference being held in New Orleans, LA. The AJA is the largest independent association of judges from both appellate & trial courts throughout the United States and Canada. Olds has previously served as Secretary, Vice President and a member of the Board of Governors. She also previously served on the Executive Committee and has chaired the Juvenile Justice, Bylaws, and Membership Committees of the AJA.

Black Scientist Honored For Cancer Research
Phoenix, AZ – Dr. John Carpten, senior investigator and director of the Integrated Cancer Genomics Division at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), has been named a "Trailblazer" by Science Spectrum magazine. The Trailblazers are outstanding Hispanic, Asian American, Native American, and Black professionals in the science arena whose leadership and innovative thinking on the job and in the community extend throughout and beyond their industry. Dr. Carpten's work at TGen is focused on searching for genetic identifiers that will act as predictors for prostate cancer, a disease whose incidence is three times more likely in African American men and six times more likely to lead to death in that population.

Actress Tamara Dobson, Star Of "Cleopatra Jones," Dies At Age 59
Baltimore, MD – Actress Tamara Dobson, best remembered for her portrayal of the kung fu-fighting, Afro-wearing, fashion-conscious government super agent Cleopatra Jones, died Oct. 2 of complications from pneumonia and multiple sclerosis in a Baltimore rehabilitation facility. She was 59 years old. Born May 14, 1947, in Baltimore, Dobson was a former beautician who earned a degree in fashion illustration from the Maryland Institute of Art. She went on to work as a professional model, posing for a legendary fashion spread in Ebony magazine sporting her signature giant Afro. Dobson is survived by her brother, Peter, and sister, Darilyn, a model who became known as the Palmer's Cocoa Butter girl.

First Black Newspaper In Iraq
Baltimore, MD – The AFRO-American Newspapers sent reporter Leonard Sparks to Bagdad to be embedded with American troops in mid-October, intending to have him embedded till mid-November. The AFRO hopes to provide a first-hand account of the war's progress and soldier stories from a Black news perspective. In doing this, the AFRO will not only bring weekly news stories from Bagdad to the newspaper, but also daily updates, entitled 'Today in Bagdad,' which will include audio and video feeds through its website Afro.com and other unique content for AFRO readers. Sparks will be available for scheduled broadcast interviews to radio and television networks through radio satellite communication.

Prostate Cancer In Black Men Studied
Phoenix, AZ - Researchers from 12 institutions across the country announced the results of the first genome-wide linkage study of prostate cancer in African Americans. Using genetic markers, researchers identified several regions of the human genome that likely contain genes that, when altered, increase the risk of developing prostate cancer.
The study was conceived, implemented and executed primarily by African American investigators. Published in the journal, The Prostate, the AAHPC is a milestone in years of research designed to identify genetic risk factors for prostate cancer and to help determine if heredity plays a role in the disparity in prostate cancer rates seen among African American men. AAHPC is the largest study to date that focuses on prostate cancer in African American families.

Zebra Lane Greek Art And Gifts Supports Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Philadelphia, PA – In support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Zebra Lane Greek Art & Gifts LLC pledges to donate a portion of the proceeds from their online holiday card sales. Ten percent of all holiday cards purchased Oct. 21-Dec. 15 will go to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). NBCF works with local organizations to execute programs that provide desperately needed services to residents of some of this country's poorest neighborhoods. Donations to the National Breast Cancer Foundation go toward saving lives through early detection by offering free mammograms to women with modest incomes, educational programs and cancer research projects. African American women are more likely to die from breast cancer due to late detection.
