School-Based Health Centers Keep Kids In Classroom

By Lisa Abrams, program manager, Denver Health School-Based Health Centers

Providing direct access to a wide array of health care services in the school setting helps students, teachers and parents.

Students who get their health care from a school-based health center don’t have to miss class for check-ups, physicals, and follow-up care. They often can be seen during lunch periods, before or after school, or during free periods, thereby keeping them in class and decreasing absences due to illness or doctor’s appointments.

School-based health centers are also convenient for parents by reducing the time taken off from work to bring a child to a doctor’s office for an appointment. And, teachers love school-based health centers because their students aren’t missing important lessons.

Denver Health’s School-Based Health Centers are fully integrated into each school’s community, and have been successful in improving the health and well-being of the students.

Located in 12 Denver public schools, students need to look no further than the health center in their school to receive physical exams, immunizations, vision and hearing screenings, parent and student health education, pregnancy testing, diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, routine laboratory tests, and some prescription medications.

In addition, health center staff can care for minor illnesses or injuries such as strep throat or joint sprains.  Students with chronic problems such as asthma can visit the health center for frequent check-ups to make sure that their condition is controlled
Also, services for mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, panic disorders, and ADHD are treated by social workers, psychologists, and child/adolescent psychiatrists from Denver Health’s Outpatient Behavioral Health Services, the Mental Health Center of Denver, and St Anthony Hospital.  Education, counseling, and treatment for drug and alcohol abuse by certified counselors from Arapahoe House are additional services provided in the school-based health centers.

All children, who are students in the schools where health centers are located, may access services whether or not they are covered by health insurance.  The only requirement to receive services is parental consent at the beginning of each school year.  Students may use the health center services at any time during the school year, for any reason, without fees or cost to the family.
