James and Lillie BrackenCouple Celebrates 60th Anniversary

James and Lillie Bracken, of Denver, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last month. They renewed their vows at the Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas with family and friends. The Grand Champagne Reception to top off their celebration was held at the Riviera Hotel and Casino. James Bracken Sr. is retired from the city and county of Denver, and Lillie Bracken is retired from Continental Airlines. They are the parents of two, the grandparents of five, and the great-grandparents of four.

CIC Gives Denver Student $1,000 Scholarship
College In Colorado, in partnership with the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA), awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Tumsa Bedane, a junior at Denver South High School. Students were nominated for the Active Scholar Award by their high school coaches, and were chosen based on their GPA (3.5 or higher) and participation in CHSAA sanctioned activities. Bedane was presented the Active Scholar Award on the field of the Colorado Rockies Game on June 6. He currently holds a 3.7 GPA, has participated in two years of track and field, and two years of cross country. The State of Colorado initiated College In Colorado as a statewide effort to improve college access and change expectations about college for all Colorado students.

Hickenlooper Appoints New Director, CIO
Mayor John Hickenlooper announced that Awilda R. Marquez will join the administration as its new director of excise and licenses, and that Molly Rauzi will join as the chief information officer for the City and County of Denver. Marquz will oversee a department of about 22 full-time staff members who are responsible for issuing over 100 different classes of Denver business licenses. Marquez will be responsible for overseeing the city’s licensing authority that administers the Colorado liquor and beer codes and the city of Denver’s cabaret code. Marquez most recently served as an attorney with Hall & Evans, L.L.C. in Denver in its public entity division. Rauzi was hired as Deputy CIO by in August 2004, and has served as the Acting Chief Information Officer since January of this year.  In her new capacity, Rauzi will be responsible for executing the city’s technology strategy and ensuring operational excellence citywide using applied technology. The CIO also manages the Channel 8 Television Station, the DenverGov website, and the 311 Call Center Operations.

New Arvada Center Executive Director Named
Gene Sobczak, currently executive vice president of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, has been named the new executive director of the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities. Sobczak brings 19 years of private sector and non-profit management experience to the position. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and English from Rutgers University. Sobczak comes to the Arvada Center as it is poised to reposition itself in the marketplace. The recent expansion has provided new programming opportunities for which to cultivate a broader audience base. The Arvada Center is already ranked the 8th largest Denver-Area Cultural Attraction, but there's room for growth in the marketplace and the Arvada Center wants to assume a more aggressive growth strategy. Sobczak will begin with the Arvada Center on Sept. 4.
