Sinai Baptist’s 39th Anniversary
The Mt. Sinai Baptist Church will be celebrating its 39th anniversary this month with special Sunday sermon speakers, all at 3 p.m., at the church at 3356 Clayton St. in Denver. On Aug. 5, the speaker will be Pastor Rodney Perry with the Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church. On Aug. 12, the speaker will be Pastor Fred Brockington with the Progressive Missionary Baptist Church. On Aug. 19, the speaker will be Pastor Bruce Kinchen with the New Resurrection Baptist Church of Colorado Springs. The speaker for Aug. 26 will be announced later. Sankofa Presents “Art Of A Creative Mind”
The Sankofa Arts Alliance presents "The Art of a Creative Mind," an art show featuring work by Tomas E. Lockhart, at the Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library gallery, 2401 Welton St. in Denver. The show runs Aug. 4-27, and is free and open to the public. Colorado Prisons Hold Public Forum
Colorado-CURE and Colorado Department of Corrections will host a public forum Wednesday, September 5, from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. at the Denver Women's Correctional Facility, 3600 Havana St., Denver. CDOC Executive Director Aristedes Zavaras and other DOC personnel will listen to concerns and answer questions. Colorado-CURE is a nonprofit organization providing information and support to 17,000 prisoners in Colorado, as well as to their families and friends. All citizens are welcome to attend the forum.

Unity In The Community Event
The Genesis Missionary Baptist Church will hold its family event, Unity in the Community, on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the church, at 2958 Josephine St. in Denver. Youth Sailing Classes Through Labor Day
Community Sailing of Colorado offers summer enrichment classes at Cherry Creek State Park in Aurora and Standley Lake Regional Park in Westminster, Monday through Friday through Labor Day. New this summer, Community Sailing is partnering with Majestic View Nature Center to teach Discover Nature while Skimming the Water, examining the ecosystem of Standley Lake and its impact on the surrounding area from a sailboat. Instruction is based on the Cooperative Learning Concept; kids teaching kids, combining sailing, leadership and instruction. Community Sailing is dedicated to providing public access and a safe summer sailing experience to all youth at an affordable cost, with financial assistance available. New sessions in various levels begin every week.

Eighth Annual Lakewood Art Fest Aug. 4, 5
Metal pouring and culinary demonstrations bring a new flair to the Eigth Annual Lakewood Art Fest, presented by the City of Lakewood’s Heritage, Culture and the Arts Division, on Saturday, Aug. 4, and Sunday, Aug. 5, at Lakewood’s Heritage Center, 801 S. Yarrow St. in Belmar Park. SPH ArtFunctions will provide the demonstrations during Art Fest, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. This year’s festival will present the works of more than 50 artists ranging from watercolor, oil and acrylic painting, ceramics, photography, sculpture and textiles. Art Fest will also feature the Art Experience Zone, interactive art-creating demonstrations, and live entertainment also is part of the fun. Admission is free.

The Other Side Arts Breaks Stereotypes
The Other Side Arts, a non profit art center, has teamed up with Aurora Business Development center, Micro Business Development, Colorado Lawyers for the Arts, and Aurora Art in Public Places to present series of workshops designed to help artists break the “starving artist” stereotypes. This year’s workshops cover subjects including media relations, art markets and practices, capital for creative businesses, public art marketing, marketing and the law, and portfolios and Web sites. Become A Foster Grandparent
Colorado seniors have a wealth of knowledge and love to share. Volunteers of America’s Foster Grandparents are bridging the gap between our most valuable assets, seniors and youth – providing mutual benefits. The program offers opportunities for seniors to spend quality time with young people, from holding infants in pediatric hospitals, singing with preschoolers, reading to schoolchildren, to mentoring at-risk youth. Foster Grandparents must be at least 60 years of age, be willing to work 20 hours per week, and have an income limited to $12,765/year for a one-person household. Participants will receive a $212 tax-free monthly stipend for their service, which does not affect OAP, Medicare/Medicaid or Social Security, among other benefits.

Brooks Center Arts Audition Notice
Brooks Center Arts, 1400 Williams St., will hold auditions on Sunday, Aug. 12, from 1 to 5 p.m. for a fall production of original one-act plays. Brothers Redevelopment is seeking volunteer teams to paint the homes of metro area seniors during its Annual Paint-A-Thon on Saturday, Aug. 18. The event offers a great community-service or team-building opportunity for corporations, church congregations, civic and youth groups, and neighborhood associations. Brothers Redevelopment will provide the paint for volunteer teams, which should consist of at least eight members. The agency also will select a home appropriate for the size and skill level of each volunteer group.

Catholic Charities’ 10th Annual Peace 'N The Streets Fair
Catholic Charities’ presents its 10th annual Peace ‘n the Streets Health and Safety Fair on Saturday, Aug. 11, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Five Points’ Curtis Mestizo Park. The fair is a well-recognized community event in Five Points that serves more than 1,500 homeless and low-income people each year. Children receive otherwise-unavailable medical and dental screenings, plus immunizations, school supplies, professionally installed new car seats, and a host of pertinent information to strengthen vulnerable families. Many of the kids who participate have no other way to afford these basic needs without this important back-to-school event.

CBCA Leadership Arts Board Training
If you are looking for ways to contribute to your community, and want to utilize your business skills in a nonprofit, leadership capacity, then the Colorado Business Committee for the Arts invites you to participate in Leadership Arts, a unique eight-month arts leadership program. This program trains business people in strategic planning, advocacy, legal and fiscal stewardship, governance, and fundraising skills that enhance leadership ability and prepare them to serve on boards of directors of nonprofit cultural organizations. Flavors Of Aurora Celebrates Unity Of Community
The Fifth Annual Flavors of Aurora event will be held Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Gateway Christian Church, 14700 E. Free Finance Workshop By CBCC
The Colorado Black Chamber of Commerce’s inaugural leadership program, Chamber Connect, is hosting a free finance workshop on Aug. 4 at the Rocky Mountain HDC, 1135 S. Xenia St. in Denver. Free Handyman Services Available To Seniors
The Volunteers of America Safety of Seniors Handyman Program is expanding its services to serve limited income seniors, age 60 and older, in Jefferson, Arapahoe and Adams Counties, in addition to Denver County. The program uses skilled volunteers to make minor repairs and install safety devices, such as grab bars and handrails, to help limited income seniors remain safe and independent in their homes. Qualified seniors who are first time users of the program pay nothing for labor and materials used. Last year, volunteers and staff made more than 1300 repairs for over 460 low-income seniors in Denver County alone.

Fridays In The Park Concerts In August
Fridays in the Park, presented by the Denver Theatre District with music powered by The Soiled Dove, is a free music and visual art series that takes place every Friday evening through Aug. 17 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. The series is held at the Sculpture Park behind the Denver Performing Arts Complex, adjacent to Speer Boulevard between Curtis and Arapahoe streets in Denver. On Aug. 3, the performer will be Angie Stevens; on Aug. 10, Buckwild and The Hollyfelds, and on Aug. 17, Rubber Planet. Admission is free to the public and suitable for all ages. Eighth Annual Fun At The Firehouse
The eighth annual Fun at the Firehouse community open house and street festival on Aug. 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., invites the public to be a firefighter for a day at the Denver Firefighters Museum, 1326 Tremont Pl. in Denver. The activities offer kids of all ages the chance to try their hand with a fire hose, try on firefighting gear, ride on a fire truck, maneuver through the fire safety obstacle course, and put out the house-on-fire. Community partners will line the streets with information booths, and Mile High Hook and Ladder will present an antique fire truck show. This year, firefighters from across Colorado join the celebration and compete for trophies in firefighting and rescue techniques.

Gospel On The Green Aug. 11
Local and national artists will take center stage at Gospel on the Green on Saturday, Aug. 11, from 1 to 7 p.m. at the True Light Baptist Church, 14333 Bolling Dr. in Montbello. Gospel on the Green features different styles of gospel music, ranging from traditional gospel, to contemporary, bilingual, and rhythmic sounds. This event will feature Sony recording artist William Murphy, Denver’s own Largessa Munnerlyn, and the 100-voice community choir. Scripts Sought For Fall Workshop
Grandesign, Inc. is looking for scripts for a fall scriptwriting workshop. Submissions will be accepted through Aug. 17 for never-produced one-act plays that will be used in workshops classes from Oct. 27 through Nov. 3. Plays will be judged on literary merit and social relevance. Themes must address the human condition and issues facing all communities, especially communities of color. At least four scripts will be selected for readings on Nov. 2 and 3, and for full production in February 2008. Finalists will receive feedback on their work from a panel of local playwrights, actors, producers and theater patrons and a cash award. All submissions must be accompanied by a $20 application fee no later than Aug. 17.

KGNU Hosts Events In August
KGNU Community Radio will host several community events in August. One event is a three-day radio workshop Aug. 7-9, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., for teens age 12-19 at the KGNU studios, 4700 Walnut St. in Boulder. The classes will cover in-studio radio broadcast skills, field recording basics, using sound editing software, how to be a music disc jockey, creating a news feature and/or radio drama and more. Another event is the Third Annual Gospel Talent Show and Ice Cream Social on Sunday, Aug. 19, in the studio parking lot from 4 to 6 p.m. This event will feature ice cream donated by Glacier Homemade Ice Cream, and local gospel groups, including Bishop G.M. Manual High School Needs You
Join Metro Volunteers, Hands On Network, The Home Depot, and Manual High School for the Manual High School revitalization project on Saturday, Aug. 4, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Thursday, Aug. 9, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. ABC’s Good Morning America will feature the project with live coverage from the school on Aug. 9. Projects include painting, landscaping, graffiti removal and more. All volunteers will receive a T-shirt and free food. Youth volunteers must be at least 14 years old, and one adult chaperone must be present for every four youths.

Eighth Annual Small Business Resource Fair
The Small Business Administration will sponsor the eighth annual Small Business Resource Fair on Thursday, Aug. 16, from 10:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., at the Denver Public Library main branch, 10 W. 14th Ave. in Denver. There will be more than 40 exhibitors, including: small business organizations; city, state and federal agencies; prime contractors; chambers of commerce; micro lenders; bankers; and more. There will be morning and afternoon workshops and panel discussions throughout the day. One-on-one counseling services will be available, with a Spanish counselor available in the morning. Sale And Blood Drive To Support Temple Micah
Clear out your “household junk” and give your discards to Temple Micah’s Garage Sale for Social Action, to be held Aug. 4 and 5, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., on the lawn at 2600 Leyden St. in Denver. Organizers will accept any donations except adult clothing. Bargains will abound for all customers who likewise buy. Donors are requested to drop off contributions during the week before the sale or on the sale days, and to expedite setup by pre-pricing each item before bringing anything. Merchandise unsold by Sunday afternoon will be given to a service organization. There will also be a blood drive on Aug. 5, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., when Bonfils Blood Center parks its bus near the garage sale.

betts Co-Directs The Torturer
Legendary Nichelle Nichols (Lt. Uhura of the original Star Trek series) will star in a sharp new pic, The Torturer, along with rising star powerhouse Andrew Walker, and introducing chic Persian newbie Mahsa Masoudi and former CNN anchor Sophia Choi. The Torturer will be produced and co-directed by donnie l. betts (Music Is My Life, Politics My Mistress). The Torturer, a.k.a. Force Drift, is a bleeding-edge psycho-thriller from writer/director Graham Green that dives headfirst into an adrenaline-fueled world of psycho-killers, secret prisons, terrorists, and political intrigue. The film follows a ‘military contractor’ who returns from Iraq pursued by a terrifying secret that an alluring, ambitious doctor ultimately reveals. The film will be shot in Denver, with a release date of 2008.
