Performing sketches for an audience of kids, selling jokes to New Yorkers on the go and a sitcom screen test are among the challenges that 10 moms face in Nick at Nite’s five-part reality series, Search for the Funniest Mom in America 2, premiering on Tuesday, April 4 at 10 p.m. All times are ET/PT. Actress Katey Sagal (Married…with Children, 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter) is hosting the competition in which 10 finalists live together and compete in a variety of comedic challenges vying for the chance to win the title of “Nick at Nite’s Funniest Mom in America.” The series will culminate with an hour-long finale on Tuesday, May 9 from 9:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., in which judges Mario Cantone (Broadway’s Laugh Whore, Sex and the City), Carol Leifer (The Larry Sanders Show, Seinfeld) and Alfonso Ribeiro (Fresh Prince of Bel Air, All of Us) select a winner.
Denver’s Just Jay (right) and Rubi Nicholas (below) are among the 10 finalists as Nick at Nite follows them as they live together in a penthouse suite in New York City.
Just Jay is a nine-year veteran comic who has been performing in the Denver area for the past five years and previously in New York. According to Just Jay, she is excited about being selected as one of the top 10 moms for the reality show and says this show is not like the others. “I am looking forward to returning home with the $50,000 prize and enjoying it with my 204-month-old son, Kristian, who attends George Washington High School. And to everyone I owe…get in line!”
Throughout each 30-minute episode, they receive surprise visits from celebrity guests and the series’ host, Katey Sagal, and compete in a variety of comedic challenges, each underscoring the contestants’ talents and personalities. The moms, divided into teams, tackle everything from entertaining an audience of kids, to performances in New York City, to a sitcom screen test challenge. The lowest scoring performers on each challenge will face-off against each other in a head-to-head stand-up comedy battle. Over the course of the series, five moms will be eliminated and the five remaining contestants will compete in the show’s finale, performing stand-up comedy to a packed house on a New York City stage. Judges Mario Cantone, Carol Leifer and Alfonso Ribeiro will select the winner, who will be awarded $50,000, the chance to develop her own show for Nick at Nite, and host a special night of programming on the network.

Darlene Westgor, who was crowned “The Funniest Mom in America” for 2005, has been paired by Nick at Nite with renown comic and screenwriter Carol Leifer (Seinfeld, The Larry Sanders Show) for a pilot that is based on Westgor’s life as a single mom living and working in Minnesota. Leifer recently spent time with Westgor in her home to immerse herself into Westgor’s life to help shape the network’s untitled pilot, which will be shot in Los Angeles this spring.
The other eight moms competing for the title of The Funniest Mom in America are Lisa Alvarado (Los Angeles, CA), Paula Bel (Los Angeles, CA), Nellie Coes (Portland, ME), Sherry Davey (Brooklyn, NY), Donna Lee McBride (Austin, TX), Angela Montgomery (Cincinnati, OH), Donna Murray (St. Louis, MO), and Christine Stedman (St. Louis, MO).
After receiving hundreds of entries from moms around the country, Nick at Nite narrowed its selection down to 21 women. The women were chosen to perform at the semi-finals in January at New York City’s Laugh Factory, where the final 10 moms were selected to appear in the reality series. |
