April 2008 Message from the Editor

April 20 will bring the re-launch of the Denver Urban Spectrum Web site at www.denverurbanspectrum.com. You can read all about our new online features in this month’s article by Publisher Bee Harris. To meet the expectations of changing audiences and fulfill a wider range of community needs, Bee, our staff and RNR Design Group have worked hard to develop the new site in time for the 21st anniversary of the newspaper.
Delivering news about people of color to the Denver metro area and beyond since 1987, the Denver Urban Spectrum has been blessed with connections to leaders, activists, innovators, entrepreneurs and many, many interesting and influential people. I believe the aim has been and continues to be to connect our readers and advertisers to this group, expanding horizons for all.
The very kernel of this mission is achieved through the presentation of original, thought-provoking stories from a dedicated, multi-talented group of writers. This month, writer Linda Brown informs us about a proposed amendment to Colorado’s constitution, limiting affirmative action programs. Andrea Juarez inspires us with a tale about an African-American investor group, while Fernando Crocheron alerts us of issues surrounding Native American burial sites.
James Ainsworth interviews U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Africa Jendayi Frazer, Annette Walker features longtime activist Angela Davis, and Athanasius Ohaya profiles Northeast Academy Charter School. Finally, LisaMarie Martinez entertains us with stories about local, multicultural media outlet CoLours TV and Shadow Theatre Company’s debut show in its new home in Aurora.
In the following pages and on our updated Web site, we offer a multicolored quilt of people, events, history and ideas. As the Spectrum has for 21 years, we wish you an enjoyable (and perhaps even useful) reading experience.
